Manchester City players celebrated a third straight Premier League title and immediately set their sights on more glory insisting they were “not finished yet” with history within reach. Kyle Walker led calls for his teammates to stay focused and hungry and add FA Cup and Champions League wins to secure the treble.
But he admitted that if things go according to plan Pep Guardiola’s side could go down as one of the greatest teams of all time in the Premier League. “We’re not finished, we’ve got the FA Cup against our bitter rivals and the Champions League final on June 10,” he said.
“We will enjoy it today, we will have a few glasses of champagne but then we move onto June, which is the big one. Hopefully we can create history with this great club.
“It would be fantastic to complete the treble, but there’s a lot of football to be played before we start thinking about the treble. We have two massive finals.
“To say we’re up there with the greatest Premier League teams of all time we have to go and conquer some of that. We’ve done the formidables and the centurions, but really to go and get this we can really stamp our mark on being one of the greatest teams of all time in the Premier League.”
City trailed Arsenal by eight points in early April 7 albeit with a game in hand, were handed the title by the Gunners’ defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday night.
And it has been a relentless drive towards a third straight trophy with 12 Premier League games in a row of 24 unbeaten in all competitions.
“Since the last international break we just feel unstoppable, especially in April,” said Jack Grealish.
“I think that’s probably one of the strongest months this club has ever had. We won eight of nine and drew one at Bayern Munich. We’ve got so much talent in this squad and we feel unstoppable.”
Kevin de Bruyne saluted the hard work that had gone into the fifth title of his City career. “People expect us to win a lot but we work every day for this. People sacrifice a lot for the team. It is tougher physically than it is mentally because you have to go and go again,” he said.
Losing manager Frank Lampard claimed City were the benchmark against which Chelsea should measure themselves as they try to rebuild from annus horribilis.
“They are outstanding and that is why they are on for a possible treble. Their level for the past two months or longer has been outstanding,” he said.
“They have built it for years, with incredible vision and brought in a great coach and players. So they are the benchmark. City have not won three in a row through half-intensity, they have had to work and work and work.
“The players have to understand that. They have to put in the work. It is something they have to strive towards.”
