Man Utd and Chelsea target Dumfries steals Gakpo’s World Cup limelight

Manchester United and Chelsea are sure to have sat up and taken note on Saturday as Denzel Dumfries powered the Netherlands towards a convincing World Cup win over the USA. Before kick-off, Cody Gakpo had been the undisputed star for Louis van Gaal’s men but Dumfries tore the Americans apart to book a spot in the quarter-finals.

Dumfries was already a household name leading up to the World Cup, having impressed with the likes of PSV Eindhoven and Inter Milan. His stock has only risen further since taking to the pitch in Qatar, however, going about his business effectively despite Gakpo’s three-goal haul stealing the headlines for the Dutch so far.

It was the flying full-back’s turn to take the spotlight against the USA as his mesmerising display included one goal and two assists from the right flank. A pair of cutbacks – one for Memphis Depay and the other for Daley Blind, had put Van Gaal’s side in control before half-time.

After the break, Haji Wright fired the USA back to within one as his peculiar finish sailed over the head of Andries Noppert, but Dumfries soon came up with a well-taken volley of his own to put the match beyond doubt.

Chelsea have been trigger happy in the transfer market since Todd Boehly’s joint-takeover and Dumfries could be recruited in January to provide competition for Reece James and cover for the ageing Cesar Azpilicueta. The Dutchman is currently contracted to Inter until 2025.

Although Dumfries outshone Gakpo on Saturday, United are still said to be firmly interested in the forward, who scored in each of the Netherlands’ first three matches in Qatar.
