Manchester United are conducting pre-medical examinations on Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir ahead of a potential deal for the Turkey international shot-stopper. The Red Devils are working on a cut-price transfer for the 25-year-old in anticipation that Dean Henderson will depart the club, meaning there is a gap within Erik ten Hag’s squad that will need to be plugged.
But first, United want to ensure Bayindir will be fit to provide competition for Andre Onana should he get the chance to embark on a new challenge in the Premier League.
That’s because he is currently nursing a back injury that United want to assess before completing a move.
According to The Athletic, the tests are taking place in Greece with United poised to pay around £4.3million for Bayindir – providing they decide to move ahead with a transfer.
The Red Devils have looked at other goalkeeping options this summer including Zion Suzuki but they were unable to entice the Japan international into the move.
They are also considering other options and it is still not certain that they will push ahead with the signing of Bayindir.
Ten Hag is mindful that current No.2 Henderson does not want to warm the bench this season following his loan spell with Nottingham Forest.
Although the move finished on a sour note due to injury, Henderson does have several options on the table in the final stages of the transfer window.
Nottingham Forest remain interested in the England international despite the signing of Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner.
Crystal Palace are now believed to be at the front of the queue with Vicente Guaita set to depart Selhurst Park.
The Spaniard allegedly refused to play for the Eagles during pre-season and they are now looking for replacements.
Sam Johnstone is currently Palace’s No.1 but he turned in a costly display against Arsenal after bringing down Eddie Nketiah for a penalty that was converted by Martin Odegaard.
Ten Hag recently told Henderson that he needs to fight for minutes but there is an appreciation that he is probably unlikely to receive them following the £47m signing of Onana.
“We have a group of keepers and, as everyone else, you have to fight for your position,” Ten Hag said at the end of July.
“I think that’s normal when you’re at United. And he is a good goalie, he has to fight and we have to see when he can return to team training.”
United are also considering the signing of another central midfielder with Ryan Gravenberch and Sofyan Amrabat among those of interest.
A centre-back would also be considered if United can convince Harry Maguire to leave the club, a prospect that does not currently look likely.
