Man Utd backed to make Robert Lewandowski transfer bid if Kylian Mbappe joins Real Madrid

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been touted as a potential long-term transfer target for Manchester United. And there is speculation that Kylian Mbappe going to Real Madrid would set off a chain of events which could ultimately lead to the Red Devils making a move for the Polish international.

Lewandowski has gained a reputation as one of the most feared forwards in Europe over the last few seasons due to his consistently prolific showings in front of goal.

Although he is now 33 the player does not show any signs of slowing down any time soon, and he bagged a staggering 48 times in 40 games for his club in all competitions in the last campaign.

However, recent reports have stated that Lewandowski wants a new challenge away from Germany, with a Premier League move not out of the question.

The likes of Manchester City have been among his suggested destinations.

But according to transfer expert Duncan Castles, if PSG star Mbappe makes the move to Madrid, that could then lead to Paul Pogba going to the Parc des Princes, leaving United with the necessary money to potentially bid for Lewandowski.

Speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast while making reference to Lewandowski’s situation, Castles said: “Manchester United we know long term are in the market for a centre-forward. They’ve retained Edinson Cavani for this season but there was a point they were considering bringing a new striker in and that’s still in their plans.

“I think we went into this market talking about how important strikers were and how the movement of certain strikers was going to determine how dominoes fall and what else happens, I think we’re still there. Does Kylian Mbappe move this summer? Do Madrid put that money across to Paris Saint-Germain immediately?

“If they do I’ll be incredibly surprised if PSG don’t respond by going out and making a significant signing to dampen down the headlines of losing their star Frenchman, their star player from their own country, at the tail end of the market.

“I don’t see Qatar taking it lightly if Mbappe gets his way and goes to Madrid. Then there’s money to be spent.

“A replacement comes in, you could see PSG deciding if they lose Mbappe that the player to replace him with is Paul Pogba, who is running down his contract and is a French national team player so you get a new star Frenchman.

“That leaves money in United’s hands to work on areas of the team they’re still targeting. They’ve said they’ll do that if they make a transfer happen.”

United have already brought in Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton so far this summer as they look to mount a charge for the Premier League title.

They started the campaign with a stunning 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Leeds at Old Trafford last weekend.

And they will be hot favourites to make it two wins out of two when they face a trip to Southampton on Sunday.

The prospect of a player of the quality of Lewandowski joining the attacking talent the Red Devils already have is a terrifying one for defenders.

And it would certainly be a huge statement of intent as they look to return to their glory days.
