Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag clarifies Jonny Evans decision after surprise return
Erik ten Hag has explained the reason why he has handed Jonny Evans the chance to return to Manchester United this summer – even if the defender could yet move onto pastures new. The former Leicester man is back training with the Red Devils following his release at the King Power Stadium and United confirmed on Tuesday that the Northern Ireland international has signed a short-term deal at Old Trafford to enable him to feature during friendlies in Edinburgh and San Diego during their pre-season tour of the United States.
It’s understood Evans will be sharpening his fitness levels while also helping United’s youngsters during his time with his former employers, which in the view of Ten Hag is a win-win for both parties.
The Dutchman told MUTV ahead of the friendly against Lyon in Scotland: “He [Evans] came to train and work on his fitness, I said all the players weren’t in, I thought it was a good idea to help each other.
“We know he’s a really experienced player, but also a big personality and authority, he can help the young players especially.”
At this moment in time, it’s unclear whether Evans could land the chance to stay with United for the 2022/23 season but if he impresses behind the scenes, it’s a possibility that cannot be ruled out.
Evans’ wife Helen also works for United as a broadcaster, hosting their official podcast while also presenting coverage on MUTV.
The three-time Premier League winner was named among the substitutes for United’s second pre-season friendly after previously beating Leeds 2-0 in Oslo, Norway.
He had previously been in talks with Leicester over a contract extension before eventually being confirmed as a free agent after five years with the Foxes.
There could potentially be room for Evans within United’s squad next season if Ten Hag believes he is up to the task of providing competition and support as a fringe player.
Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, who was named United captain for the first half against Lyon, are expected to be United’s first-choice centre-back pairing next season.
Victor Lindelof continues to be held in high regard by Ten Hag while Harry Maguire is still being pushed towards the exit door.
Maguire has been stripped of the United captaincy and is now attracting interest from West Ham as he continues to weigh up his future.
It’s beginning to get busy for United on the transfer front as they prepare to fly to the United States following their friendly clash with French side Lyon.
Andre Onana is due in Manchester to undergo a medical ahead of his £47million switch from Inter Milan and there could yet be more movement in terms of incomings very soon.
United are still chasing a deal for Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund and have now agreed personal terms for the Denmark international, who could add more goals to Ten Hag’s frontline next season.
The club are also focused on exits with Maguire, Fred, Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly and Dean Henderson among a list of stars that have been told they can leave this summer.
Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr are set to sign United full-back Alex Telles on a permanent deal following his loan spell with Sevilla last season.
