Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag influenced by Liverpool and Man City as Onana eyed

Manchester United appear to be the latest team to jump on the trend of acquiring a goalkeeper that can play out from the back. Erik ten Hag has made it no secret at Old Trafford this summer that he would like to sign Andre Onana to replace David de Gea, who recently saw his contract extension talks stall.

The Red Devils made a flying start to life under the ex-Ajax boss last season, finishing third in the Premier League and winning the Carabao Cup. However, Ten Hag believes that he is several signings away from rebuilding United into title contenders.

With Anthony Martial expected to depart, two strikers are required at the Theatre of Dreams, with another midfielder also on the shopping list to provide further depth. Though a goalkeeper is also top of the shopping list for Ten Hag.

Inter Milan shot-stopper Onana has been identified as the top target to feature between the sticks at the Theatre of Dreams next season, with the Cameroon international valued at £43million. The 27-year-old is viewed as one of the best ball-playing defenders in Europe, showing throughout the Champions League last season that he is able to fuel attacks from deep and come out of his box to be the spare man in defence to help beat the opposition press.

United are somewhat late to the party in acquiring this style of goalkeeper, though Ten Hag will feel that it is better late than never considering that De Gea looks set to leave the club this summer as a free agent.

Manchester City have thrived since signing Ederson, who has been compared to a midfielder previously, whilst Liverpool have also enjoyed success since the arrival of Alisson from Roma. Arsenal’s title charge last season proved that a goalkeeper that is comfortable with the ball at their feet is key, with Aaron Ramsdale playing a big role in how the Gunners build attacks.

Similarly, Brighton and Brentford disrupted the traditional Big Six courtesy of their possession-based style, with Jason Steele and David Raya earning praise for their composure on the ball. De Gea has produced big saves for United over the years, though struggled in possession and made several costly mistakes last season which highlighted how he is limited when asked to pick out a team-mate.

It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils are willing to cough up £43m for Onana over the next few weeks given that Inter are encouraging bids to be made soon. Elsewhere, Spanish duo Robert Sanchez and Raya have also been linked as cheaper alternatives.
