Man Utd bring back Jonny Evans after ‘impressing’ Erik ten Hag in training

Manchester United have confirmed that Jonny Evans has returned to Old Trafford on a short-term deal following his exit from Leicester City at the end of last season. The 35-year-old came through United’s academy as a youngster and made over 130 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2015, winning three Premier League titles in the process.

Spells at West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City then followed before Evans left the Foxes upon their relegation back to the Championship at the end of the previous campaign. He has since rejoined United on a short-term deal after training with their under-21s and will be able to play in the club’s upcoming pre-season matches against Lyon and Wrexham.

The move was officially announced by United on Tuesday, with a club statement confirming: “Experienced defender Jonny Evans has signed a short-term deal to enable him to take part in Manchester United’s upcoming pre-season games in Edinburgh and San Diego.

“The academy graduate had been training with the under-21s whilst considering his options, following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season. As part of the academy training programme, he has also taken part in a number of first-team sessions and impressed Erik ten Hag and the coaching staff.”

Evans, who has been capped 102 times by Northern Ireland, will travel to Edinburgh with the rest of the United squad to face Lyon on Wednesday evening. He will then link up with the academy group that will fly out to San Diego to play against Wrexham while the club’s first-team stars are in New York.

It remains to be seen whether Evans will still be on United’s books when the upcoming Premier League season gets underway, with his return to Carrington having mainly been to ensure that he stays fit while looking for a new club. However, only time will tell whether or not he manages to earn a longer-term deal if he continues to impress Ten Hag behind the scenes.
