Man Utd could solve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issue with key transfer decision

United have opened contract extension negotiations with goalkeeper David De Ge according to Fichajes reporter Ekrem Konur.

The Spaniard has been one of the club’s most impressive players so far this season, despite his mistake against Manchester City most recently, and looks to have secured the no.1 spot for the coming seasons.

At 34, some Red Devils fans thought that De Gea would stay to the end of his contract, 2024, then depart the club, but the report states that a new deal is surprisingly in the works.

If the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper does put pen to paper at Old Trafford then that may see Dean Henderson depart the club as a result.

A new deal for De Gea certainly indicates that Solskjaer sees him as his preferred option between the sticks, and thus it is only a matter of time before Henderson decides that he must leave the club to further his career.

In the previous campaign, the two goalkeepers were often rotated which raised many to question whether the manager knew who he thought was his best option.

However, Henderson has not made a single appearance this season since returning to the first-team setup in late September, having suffered from Covid-19, and will probably seek a way out from the Theatre of Dreams if he isn’t promised regular minutes.

Former United keeper Mark Bosnich revealed that he felt Henderson needed to seize the initiative and force a move sooner rather than later, prior to the talks of De Gea’s extension.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Bosnich said: “I think he should go. He’s at the stage of his career where he needs to be playing regular football,

“He’ll know that as well. I understand that at the start of the season, him having a go in pre-season to see how things plan out.

“De Gea has been excellent and there’s no doubt about it, but I think from Dean Henderson’s point of view, he needs to start looking after Dean Henderson.”

The Australian then revealed that he thinks another Premier League outfit should go after the former Sheffield United loanee.

“Newcastle are a club who are on the go and on the move but they are also in a perilous position right now. They’ve got a new manager [Eddie Howe] and it’s important to get your spine right and the goalkeeper is the integral part of that.

“Dean Henderson should go and should go as soon as he possibly can.”

Given that Henderson is still only 24 and English, if sold he is likely to draw in a healthy figure – especially considering Arsenal paid £30m for Aaron Ramsdale (23) over the summer.

If United are able to collect a figure of that nature for out of favour Henderson then they could use the newfound funds to solve one of their key issues – their centre of midfield.

Ahead of this season, the Red Devils’ business was commendable but they failed to secure the signature of a top-quality player in the heart of midfield.

Declan Rice (West Ham), Eduardo Camavinga (now of Real Madrid) and Yves Bissouma (Brighton) were all linked with a move to Solskjaer’s side but no deals materialised.

If Henderson does decide that a move would further his career then United could use that money to go after one of the aforementioned or set their sights on another talent.

They have been linked with Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic in recent weeks; the Croatian is out of contract at the end of the season and may be available in January for a cut-price figure.

It remains to be seen how the goalkeeping situation pans out, but if Henderson does depart and De Gea extends his stay under the instruction of Solskjaer then it would indicate that the powers above aren’t expecting a new face in the dugout anytime soon as they would most probably delay such an important decision if so.
