United have been out of Premier League action for two weeks already, with cup competitions taking priority before the international break. Successive wins over Real Betis and Fulham kept Ten Hag’s side in the hunt for more silverware, having picked up the Carabao Cup last month.
Doing so required a victory over Newcastle at Wembley, and first-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford sealed the deal. The two sides will meet again at St James’ Park this weekend for what promises to be a high-quality clash with top-four implications.
Donny van de Beek, Christian Eriksen and Alejandro Garnacho are unavailable for selection, while Casemiro will miss out through suspension. But it’s not all doom and gloom for Ten Hag as Express Sport takes you through three key stars who could feature…
Marcus Rashford
With 14 goals in 26 matches, Rashford has more than twice as many Premier League goals as any other United player this season. It therefore came as a significant concern for supporters when he suffered a knock against Fulham last time out.
The in-form 25-year-old subsequently withdrew from the England squad for Euros qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine. Rashford is currently being assessed but there is a very real possibility that he will return to face the Magpies, against whom he netted at Wembley in February.
Anthony Martial
The tale of Martial’s campaign has been a hugely frustrating one, with many supporters expecting him to reach top form under Ten Hag after rediscovering his scoring touch in pre-season. A succession of injuries have seen to that, however, with Achilles, back and hip trouble stifling his progress.
The talented forward was unavailable for United’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham before the international break, but Ten Hag acknowledged just before the match that his return had been discussed, suggesting that another two weeks of rest and recovery will have been enough to throw him back amongst the action.
