Man Utd decide against Mason Greenwood joining squad for US pre-season tour

Manchester United have decided against including Mason Greenwood in their pre-season squad for their tour of the United States. The Red Devils will play four matches in the USA but Greenwood will continue to train alone away from the club as an internal investigation to decide his future continues.

Charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control against Greenwood were dropped in February when the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued its case. A statement confirmed that “there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” due to “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”.

United launched an internal investigation at the start of February and said: “The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete.” That review is still ongoing today.

As such, the striker will not join in on the trip to the US for matches against Arsenal (Metlife Stadium, New York), Wrexham Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego), Real Madrid (NGR Stadium, Houston) and Borussia Dortmund (Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas).

The Athletic add that United have looked at potential loan destinations for the 21-year-old, who has not played competitive football now since January 2022. That may suggest United are still some way away from determining whether the attacker will ever play for the club again.

Academy graduate Greenwood has made 129 first-team appearances for the club, scoring 35 goals. He also has one cap for England which came in 2020. He has been linked with a potential move to Serie A side Atalanta.

That’s at the same time United are trying to sign Danish centre-forward Rasmus Hojlund from the Italians. But Atalanta are not interested in doing a cash-plus-player deal and want only straight cash for the 20-year-old No 9.

Greenwood was named on club’s retained list for the coming season and it is still possible he is a member of Erik ten Hag’s team for the 2023-24 campaign. Though it is unclear when United will reveal the results of their investigation.

The player recently confirmed via Instagram that he has become a father for the first time to a baby with his girlfriend. He was this month pictured training with United team-mate Anthony Elanga as he bids to keep his fitness up for when he resumes his playing career.
