Man Utd defender Victor Lindelof hit by fan object during FA Cup final VAR chaos
Fernandes scored from the spot after VAR official David Coote controversially advised a penalty to United. Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s header across goal seemed to flick the fingers of Manchester City ace Jack Grealish from close range.
Grealish’s hand was deemed to be in an unnatural position. The winger had chased back to track Wan-Bissaka’s run.
Having originally waved play on amid United’s protests, referee Paul Tierney was advised to review the footage on the pitch-side monitor. To Grealish’s fury, the official pointed to the spot.
City were enraged by the decision, having controlled the majority of the first half.
United midfielder Fernandes sent Stefan Ortega the wrong way with his spot-kick. But the controversy continued when the Red Devils players ran to the corner of the pitch to celebrate the equaliser in front of the City fans.
Lindelof was seen hunched over in the middle of the huddle. Fernandes and Casemiro were seen shouting at somebody positioned off-camera, with it initially unclear what had caused the issue.
Replays showed that the Swede had been struck by a missile seemingly thrown from the section of City fans placed behind the goal. It was unclear what the object might have been, but Lindelof was seen clearly reacting in pain as it struck his face. Tierney could be seen quickly moving the United players away from the incident.
It came during an action-packed first half at Wembley between United and City. Midfielder Ilkay Gundogan scored the fastest-ever goal in an FA Cup final after just 13 seconds, thumping a tremendous volley into the top corner of David De Gea’s goal.
Rodri then nearly made it 2-0 just moments later, heading into the side-netting from Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick. However, United managed to claw themselves back into the final and equalised through Fernandes.
Lindelof was able to continue after being struck by the object. The 28-year-old scored the winning penalty in the semi-final shootout victory over Brighton.
