Man Utd devise Marcus Rashford plan as £60m Rasmus Hojlund deal edges closer
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is prepared to push Marcus Rashford to a more central role for the start of the season with Rasmus Hojlund potentially being used out wide to begin with. United are moving forward in their attempts to sign the highly-rated Hojlund from Atalanta this week.
They’ve made an opening offer worth a little over £50million in total to sign the forward, but a higher bid will be needed to get Atalanta to sell. Despite an agreement not being done, United appear to already be planning for the current season with Hojlund on board.
The Premier League campaign gets underway in little over two weeks and Ten Hag has had to experiment through the middle in pre-season matches. Jadon Sancho has been used as a false nine at times, but The Athletic claim Rashford could be pushed to the central attacking role to start the campaign.
The England international recently admitted to Gary Neville that his preferred position is out on the left flank. Rashford made the position his own last season, ending the campaign with an impressive tally of 30 goals in all competitions.
He was occasionally used through the middle when needed as Ten Hag failed to get the most out of an injured Anthony Martial as well as Wout Weghorst. And it appears as though the 25-year-old will have to make do with playing in his unfavoured role for the start of the campaign even if Hojlund arrives.
United will know the importance of hitting the ground running to start the campaign to pile pressure on their rivals at the top of the table. With Newcastle breaking into the top four last year and the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham all vying to return to Champions League football in 2024, United will have to be on top of their game throughout the season.
