Man Utd ‘discard’ Rashford possibility as coach notes come to light

Manchester United officials are no longer discussing the possibility of Marcus Rashford having a career away from Old Trafford with the forward’s coaches impressed by his improvement under Erik ten Hag, according to reports. Rashford has enjoyed a monumental revival under the new Red Devils boss, already exceeding his goal tally from last term.

The 25-year-old bagged the winner in last weekend’s 1-0 victory over West Ham and candidly spoke afterwards about his mental struggles in the previous season. Insiders apparently noticed very early improvements in Rashford’s performances following the appointment of Ten Hag.

Coaches reportedly ‘noted’ that the England forward’s work rate increased in the early pre-season training sessions under the Dutch head coach. He was showing a desire to win 50-50 duels that had been missing in the previous campaign under Ralf Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rashford had increasingly been linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain in the few transfer windows prior to this season. Club officials had even discussed whether a move away would be beneficial for the academy graduate.

However, The Athletic has claimed that those talks have been ‘discarded’, such is the marked improvement of Rashford this year. His seven goals across all competitions are already better than the five he managed in 2021-22.

Opening up about his struggles last season, Rashford revealed that he would often not be in the correct headspace for matches. He lost his place in the England team towards the end of 2021, and now faces a battle to be recalled by Gareth Southgate ahead of the World Cup.

“It’s a completely different energy around the club and the training ground. That puts me in a better headspace and I just feel really motivated now. That’s the area I was struggling in,” Rashford told Sky Sports about the change under Ten Hag.

“I was struggling at times with more mental things. It wasn’t really my own performance but other things off the pitch. That’s the biggest difference from last season.

“I get that it’s your job to speak about what happens on the pitch but for the players we have to get into the right headspace for every game.

“Too often last season, I wasn’t in the right headspace for games. I wasn’t surprised by some of the stuff that was happening.”
