Man Utd draw up Marcus Rashford contract plan amid impasse in talks

Manchester United will trigger a 12-month option on Marcus Rashford’s contract before Christmas if they fail to agree a new five-year deal with the England striker. There is concern at Old Trafford about Rashford’s future, as he’s out of contract at the end of the season.

Talks are ongoing on a new deal, but no agreement has been struck yet. And United are aware that megabucks French giants Paris Saint-Germain are eyeing Rashford’s situation. The Red Devils, therefore, will safeguard their position by taking up the option extension they hold on Rashford’s contract, to avoid the risk of losing him in the summer as a free agent.

But before that, they will continue negotiations on a deal which would see the academy product commit his long-term future to the club, if agreement is reached. United boss Erik ten Hag is keen to see that outcome to what have turned out to be protracted negotiations.

Rashford, 24, is currently sidelined with a muscle injury which ruled him out of the latest England squad. Rashford earns around £180,000 a week at Old Trafford, which lags behind fellow England star Jadon Sancho’s reported £350k-a-week deal. Any new deal will see his pay packet bumped up.

While England boss Gareth Southgate said of Rashford ahead of the winter World Cup: “There were certain players we wanted to keep involved this time but that said it doesn’t mean that this is the end for some of the others who aren’t involved,” said Southgate.

“Marcus Rashford, for example, has shown some encouraging signs recently. He is a player we know well so if he can perform at a high level in the next few weeks, he of course will be under consideration.”
