Man Utd ‘face £18m spend’ for Mauricio Pochettino to replace sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Mauricio Pochettino’s continued links with Manchester United over the past three years have become more intense following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Sunday. And with the Paris Saint-Germain boss supposedly willing to make the switch, reports have come to light over just how much the decision to swap Solskjaer for the Argentine will cost United chiefs.

The report by the Manchester Evening News states that United are increasingly confident of hiring Pochettino as their next boss given their sacking of Solskjaer after the 4-1 drubbing at Watford.

Solskjaer’s departure cost United a reported £7.75million in compensation, hiked up after the Norwegian signed a new three-year deal in July this year.

It remains to be seen if a deal for Pochettino will be completed after United’s search for an interim boss – someone to take them through to the end of the season before parting ways – could still occur.

Yet according to the MEN, Pochettino’s compensation has been set at £10m by PSG if they are to release their manager to Old Trafford.

And this would bring the total cost of managerial replacement to just shy of £18m when taking Solskjaer’s compensation package into account.

Pochettino will land in Manchester on Tuesday ahead of PSG’s crunch Champions League tie against United’s local rivals Man City on Wednesday night.

But with the Argentine based just a couple of miles away from his potential new employers, an official approach has yet to be made to appoint the ex-Tottenham boss as their new man at the helm.

The report further goes on to state that Pochettino’s willingness to move is significant as United would therefore put an end to their interim search.

But if a deal cannot be reached, other targets including Erik ten Hag would be more willing to move in the summer, thus prompting the club to continue their search for a temporary boss.

“I want to get it out there, I’m going to leave by the front door, because I think everyone knows I’ve given everything for this club.

“This club means everything to me and together we’re a good match, but unfortunately I couldn’t get the results we needed and it’s time for me to step aside.”
