Man Utd goalscorer Marcel Sabitzer takes offence to Fulham question

Marcel Sabitzer appeared to take offence to Gabriel Clarke’s questioning after Manchester United battled past Fulham with a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford to reach the FA Cup semi-finals. The Austrian international scored his first goal for the Red Devils as Erik ten Hag’s spirited side came from behind to beat nine-man Fulham, who will feel as though they threw away the game in just a matter of minutes.

Aleksandr Mitrovic had put the Cottagers in front but his afternoon ended in disgrace after he was shown a straight red card for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh.

The incident occurred just seconds after the official had sent off Willian for handling the ball on the line as United went in search of an equaliser.

Marco Silva was also dismissed during the chaos and Clarke asked Sabitzer whether he felt United won the match or it was more a case of Fulham handing it to them on a plate.

Sabitzer told ITV: “[It was a] Massive win. We wanted to go back to Wembley so we did it.

“It was hard and tough but yeah we did it. It was a good one.”

Clarke then asked: “I’m wondering if you won that or if Fulham lost it?”

A stone-faced Sabitzer wasn’t too impressed by the question, responding: “We won it? Why not? We scored three, they scored one. We were concentrated and focused until the end and yeah, I think in the first half we missed some chances but 1-0 down, we came back and that’s the important thing.”

He later added on the penalty: “I haven’t seen it, the referee decided handball and penalty so we go with it.”

And when asked what he was thinking during the carnage, he continued: “Nothing, I’m focused on the game. I’ve seen it, it was easier for us but we had to be focused on the game and result and we did it. That’s the important thing.”

Sabitzer, who was signed on loan from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day, was delighted to get off the mark for his new club after putting United in front.

“I’m very happy. It was an important one for 2-1, so I’m very, very happy now,” he concluded.

After Mitrovic’s opener, Bruno Fernandes levelled things up for United with a well-taken penalty that was dispatched confidently.

Just moments later it was 2-1 when Sabitzer put his side in front to completely blow Fulham away.

United then added some gloss to the scoreline in the closing stages when Fernandes slammed home a third for the hosts, who showed character to avoid a potentially frustrating exit.

The Red Devils will now face Brighton at Wembley for a place in the final where they could face Manchester City or Sheffield United.
