Man Utd have just hours left if they want to sign El Ghazi to replace Antony
Manchester United have emerged as shock suitors of former Premier League winger Anwar El Ghazi amid a right-wing crisis at Old Trafford, according to reports. But Erik ten Hag doesn’t have long to recruit the Dutch winger as the Premier League registration deadline looms large.
According to the Mail, problems with Antony and Jadon Sancho have prompted United to look at the free agent market for a potential emergency arrival.
The Red Devils are claimed to be considering a swoop for El Ghazi, who left PSV Eindhoven by mutual consent last week.
El Ghazi – who has also played for Ajax, Aston Villa and Everton – has offers from Saudi Arabia, but late interest from Ten Hag may turn his head.
He watched United lose 3-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium before the international break, but Sancho was absent after Ten Hag excluded him from his squad due to poor training performances.
The 23-year-old effectively labelled his manager a liar shortly after the match, which has plunged his future into serious doubt.
Meanwhile, Antony is on a leave of absence as he attempts to clear his name following abuse allegations from three former girlfriends in the Brazilian media. He has publicly vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
It leaves Ten Hag with a serious problem on the right side of his attack, with Facundo Pellistri the only natural option left at his disposal.
Amad will also hope for opportunities this term, but the 21-year-old is recovering from an injury blow suffered during pre-season.
El Ghazi can move to Old Trafford despite the English summer transfer window closing earlier this month due to his free-agent status.
But United don’t have much time if they want to acquire the 28-year-old before it’s too late.
Premier League clubs must submit their 2023/24 squads before 2pm on Wednesday, September 13.
United, therefore, have just over a day to bring El Ghazi or another emergency option through the door if they plan to go down that route.
El Ghazi made 119 appearances for Villa, registering 26 goals and 16 assists, but left for PSV for an undisclosed fee last summer.
He spent the final six months of his Villa Park career on loan at Everton but failed to impress, featuring just twice for the Premier League relegation battlers.
El Ghazi produced nine goals and two assists in 33 games for PSV last season, seemingly catching the eye of Ten Hag, who has grown a reputation for targeting players from backgrounds he is familiar with.
