Man Utd have Mauricio Pochettino problem if Glazers have to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is clinging to his job after overseeing a dismal run of form in recent months. The Norwegian hasn’t been able to turn his team’s season around despite being given plenty of time by United chiefs as well as public support from a string of his former team-mates.

United slipped to sixth in the Premier League table ahead of the international break as their 2-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City capped a run of just one win in six top-flight games.

The Red Devils have picked up only four points from the last available 18 and are now nine points off leaders Chelsea.

The patience of the Glazer family, who own the club, is being well-and-truly tested, although Solskjaer is preparing his side for Saturday’s trip to Watford.

If Solskjaer were to be shown the Old Trafford exit, the Red Devils could be tempted to lure Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino to the club as their new manager.

United will face a big problem if they do turn their attentions to Pochettino, however.

Pochettino has spoken highly of the Red Devils in the past and would likely relish the opportunity of returning to the Premier League to manage one of the biggest clubs in the world.

But the 13-time Premier League champions would already face a huge compensation payout by removing Solskjaer from his post.

So they would have to think long and hard about whether they would want to be hit with a double whammy financially.

According to The Telegraph, Pochettino is open to a Premier League return after his contract comes to an end in France.

That means, Man Utd could instead bide their time for 18 months and then agree a deal to land their man.

But Solskjaer can’t stay at Old Trafford for that long unless something significantly changes. The team appear to be moving backwards this season and can ill-afford further setbacks.

That means Man Utd may look to appoint an interim boss to calm the waters before bringing Pochettino to Old Trafford at the end of next season.

It’s a risky tactic and a drawn-out process which could get a lot of criticism.

But if United are desperate to appoint the former Tottenham boss and don’t want to pay huge compensation to PSG, that might be their only option.
