Man Utd have the perfect player to take Mason Greenwood’s No 11 shirt
Manchester United still don’t know what to do with Mason Greenwood, five months after charges were dropped against the striker. The England international could leave the club permanently, having last played for them in January 2022. And if a departure does take place, then Alejandro Garnacho is a player who would arguably be entitled to take the No 11 jersey.
Greenwood is now free to resume his career in football after charges were dropped against the 21-year-old back in February.
However, United are yet to make a final decision on the England international as they continue to conduct an investigation behind the scenes.
Greenwood, for his part, is training again. He was recently snapped with Anthony Elanga and is eager to resume his career in football.
But there’s still no guarantee he’ll return to Old Trafford.
While not as iconic as the No 7 shirt, the No 11 is still rather special over on the red side of Manchester.
It was, after all, worn by Ryan Giggs throughout his time at the club – with the Wales international winning 13 league titles and two Champions League trophies before retiring in 2014.
And if Greenwood does depart, then it’ll become free for a different United player to take.
Antony would arguably want it, having worn the jersey at Ajax before leaving for the Red Devils 12 months ago.
But Garnacho would arguably be a better fit given his vast potential and impressive season last time out.
The 19-year-old dazzled under Erik ten Hag last season, scoring five goals and clocking up nine assists across all competitions.
Garnacho had actually been hoping to secure the No 7, only for that honour to be given to new signing Mason Mount instead.
Therefore, the No 11 would arguably be a good consolation.
Garnacho, like Giggs, is a winger blessed with speed, trickery and footballing intelligence.
Many felt he should have actually started last month’s FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, instead of Jadon Sancho.
United feel Garnacho has the potential to scale even greater heights during his time with the club.
He’s certainly in it for the long haul, having signed a new contract before the end of the season.
And giving him the No 11 would be a way of incentivising the United youngster and giving him more confidence in the process.
Regarding Greenwood, meanwhile, Gabriel Agbonlahor has told talkSPORT he can’t see the England international playing for United again.
“I don’t think he will play in the Premier League again,” he said.
“I think his reputation is damaged at Manchester United and England, I do think he will play on again in a different country, a different league.
“And that’s down to them clubs, their managers and their owners if they decide to sign Mason Greenwood.
“But I do feel living in England, being at football games, seeing what fans are like at games, I can’t see him going out there and playing for Manchester United again.”
He continued: “I think for the owners as well, he’s an asset, he’s probably an £80million asset.
“A very good player, talented, 21, what are they saying about it? Do they want to sell their asset?
“It’s definitely something difficult to talk about, but for me, I can’t see in the next couple of years, him playing in the Premier League, I just can’t see it.”
