Man Utd hero Paul Scholes blasts Michael Carrick before dugout debut – ‘should have quit’

Manchester United hero Paul Scholes delivered a scathing assessment of Michael Carrick ahead of Tuesday evening’s crunch Champions League clash with Villarreal. Carrick, who has no managerial experience, has been asked to take over on a temporary basis until the Red Devils find a replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Defeat to Watford proved to be the final straw when it came to Solskjaer’s position in the hotseat, and he was promptly sacked on Sunday morning.

With no replacement plan in place, the hierarchy turned to Carrick, a member of Solskjaer’s backroom staff, to takeover on a temporary basis.

Despite spending seven years as team-mates at Old Trafford, Scholes pulled no punches when it came to his true feelings on the club’s decision.

“Four weeks ago after that Liverpool game, that was the time, the time we knew Ole was going to go it was obvious,” he told BT Sport.

Indeed, defeat by Watford was United’s third thrashing in their past five games.

Painful losses against Manchester City and Liverpool came before the international break, and they were not the first signs that things were heading south under Solskjaer.

The elephant in the room when it comes to Carrick is the prominent role he played in the whole affair, appearing as Solskjaer’s right-hand man on matchdays.

Reportedly, he also took most of the team’s training sessions this season as results spiralled and the Red Devils slipped away from the Premier League leaders.

Although Carrick is in charge at present, the search is supposedly ongoing behind the scenes to find an interim boss until the end of the season.

According to The Guardian, Ernesto Valverde has already sounded out his own transfer targets after holding talks with John Murtough.

Mauricio Pochettino is also a name in the mix, although the Argentine is likely to be a candidate for the summer rather than in the short term.
