Man Utd icon Sir Alex Ferguson ‘absolutely battered’ Gary Neville who feared for career

Gary Neville has recalled a performance against Newcastle United 15 years ago that made him fear his Manchester United career was over before it had even properly begun. Ralf Rangnick’s side have travelled to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle in their first match in 16 days, and it has sparked bad memories for the 46-year-old.

Ahead of United’s clash with Newcastle on Monday, Neville appeared as a pundit alongside Carragher on Monday Night Football.

And the ex-Red Devils defender explained he feared Ferguson would’ve ‘buried’ him on the way home after a poor first-half performance against Newcastle in 1996.

He told Sky Sports: “I [was scared I] would’ve been buried on the A1 on the way back as well, I swear. He absolutely battered me at half-time. I mean, he absolutely battered me.

“I was absolutely shocking in the first half, absolutely shocking. I was a centre-back. They should’ve scored three or four, and two or three of them were my fault.”
