Jonny Evans is back training with Manchester United eight years after the three-time Premier League winner departed Old Trafford. The 35-year-old veteran is now a free agent following his release at Leicester City although the Northern Irishman has held discussions over the prospect of extending his stay at the King Power Stadium.
Evans is now thought to be a possible option for Everton after supporters noticed an interesting soundbite from one of the club’s pre-season videos posted on their social media channels.
Within the now-deleted clip, an Everton coach appeared to state: “We’ve got Jonny Evans coming in,” in the background of the training footage.
Everton have already moved to snap up veteran Ashley Young on a free transfer and now Evans could potentially follow, although it does not appear anything is imminent.
That’s because Evans is back training with his forearm employers United at Carrington as he bids to remain in shape for the new season.
The Manchester Evening News are reporting that Evans has been training with United for the past week to maintain fitness levels.
He was once again present at Carrington on Saturday as United’s players were put through their paces on the training pitch.
Evans came through United’s youth academy and would make 198 senior appearances for the club’s first-team, scoring seven goals.
The dependable centre-back has also spent time with West Brom, Sunderland and Royal Antwerp during a career that has seen him rack up 91 appearances for his country.
One of the unsung heroes of Sir Alex Ferguson’s tenure has made a staggering 356 appearances in the Premier League and he could yet still have more to offer despite being at the tail end of his career.
Celtic are also reportedly in the mix for the experienced central defender as he seeks to explore a new challenge.
His former side Leicester have already been busy in the transfer market after moving to sign former Wolves captain Conor Coady and Callum Doyle on loan from Manchester City.
Former City assistant boss Enzo Maresca is bidding to freshen up his side at the King Power Stadium where a major clear-out is expected.
Meanwhile, United have already played their first pre-season fixture after beating Leeds 2-0 in Oslo.
Erik ten Hag’s side will face Lyon at Murrayfield in Edinburgh next week before departing for the US tour.
It means Evans’ time training with the club is likely to be nearing an end as United prepare to embark on their travels.
The Red Devils will face Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund Stateside before facing Lens (Old Trafford) and Athletic Bilbao (Dublin) before their Premier League opener against Wolves.
