Man Utd ‘like Abraham a lot’ as enquiry floated after Gakpo failure

Manchester United ‘like Tammy Abraham a lot’ and could make a move for the Roma star in the wake of their failure to sign Cody Gakpo, it has been claimed. The Red Devils had previously been considered frontrunners in the battle to land the Netherlands international. However, the 23-year-old will be joining Liverpool instead after the Reds agreed a £37million deal with PSV Eindhoven.

Manchester United want to sign a new striker this winter to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure, with the 37-year-old leaving Old Trafford by mutual consent last month.

But one player they won’t be landing is Gakpo, who is on his way to Liverpool instead following the news the Reds had agreed a £37m fee with PSV for the 23-year-old.

With United opting against battling Liverpool for the Netherlands international, they’re now set to examine their options as they hunt a new marksman.

And journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, has claimed United ‘like Abraham a lot’ – while also floating the idea they may enquire for the 25-year-old.

“I think the case for Jonathan David could now more firmly come into view,” he said.

Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag is going to sign his own Haaland

“They might even make a check on Tammy Abraham. They like him a lot, so they might even put a check in there.”

Abraham previously played for United’s fierce rivals Chelsea, helping the Blues win the Champions League back in 2021.

However, he was sold to Roma after Thomas Tuchel had deemed him surplus to requirements in west London.

Abraham did well during his first season at Roma, scoring 17 goals from 37 Serie A games – while also propelling them to UEFA Conference League glory under Jose Mourinho.

But he’s found life in Italy tougher so far this term, scoring just three goals in the league so far.

United have signed eight players from Serie A over the years, with Laurent Blanc, Juan Sebastian Veron and Giuseppe Rossi arriving wen Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the roost.

Sergio Romero and Matteo Darmian were drafted in from Sampdoria and Torino respectively during Louis van Gaal’s spell in the dugout.

Under Mourinho, United raided Juventus for Paul Pogba – who cost a club-record fee of £89m upon returning to Old Trafford in 2016.

And United brought in Amad and Cristiano Ronaldo from Atalanta and Juventus during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stint in the dugout.

Ten Hag was asked about Gakpo after seeing his United side cruise to a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

And he responded by saying: “I don’t talk about individual cases.

“We are looking for offensive players, looking for a striker, that would be good because we have so many games coming.

“We want to keep playing in all the competitions we are in, we want to keep going to the end of the season so you need numbers to keep competing.”

On his side’s display, he added: “We conceded no goals, kept a clean sheet. Happy with that because it is always the base to compete.

“We could have scored more goals definitely. We had some great attacks, lots of movement. When you have one on ones with the keeper, you have to score more goals.

“We want players in but that front four has not played much together in the first part of the season.

“If we can bring them together more often on the pitch, I’m sure they will progress and get routines together and score more goals.

“We’re not looking at league positions right now, it’s about where we are at the end of the season.

“We have to improve the process and battle for winning every game. That is the focus that the whole squad needs and every player needs to concentrate on that process.”
