Man Utd ‘loose deadline’ emerges for Greenwood decision after transfer interest

Manchester United are expected to make a decision on the future of Mason Greenwood before the 2023/24 Premier League campaign gets underway on August 11, according to reports. The England international forward remains suspended by the Red Devils as he works towards a return to action having not featured for club or country since January 2022 when he played in United’s 1-0 Premier League win over West Ham.

Greenwood is training with his own personal coach away from Carrington as he awaits further communication from United officials.

The Red Devils are continuing to conduct their own internal investigation into allegations that were made against Greenwood at the start of 2022 when he was arrested by Greater Manchester Police.

Now The Athletic are reporting that United’s own internal investigation is nearing a conclusion after months of delays.

Although there is still no indication as to what the club will do, Erik ten Hag has already confirmed the decision will be made upstairs in the Old Trafford boardroom.

Ten Hag has held various rounds of talks with Greenwood throughout the process and it’s thought he would be open to the prospect of working with the forward, who he rates highly.

United are braced to receive approaches from around Europe with various clubs from Italy thought to be keen on a transfer.

Roma and AC Milan are among those linked with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to offer his former United player a lifeline.

The club must decide whether they wish to keep, sell or loan the 21-year-old ahead of the 2023/24 season.

It has already been disclosed that Greenwood will not be reporting for pre-season training with his colleagues.

Even if he does return to the game, Greenwood is likely to face various challenges having previously been ditched by sponsors Nike.

He was also removed from the video game FIFA 22 by EA Sports following his arrest.

United begin their pre-season campaign on July 12 when they face Leeds at the Ullevaal Stadion in Norway.

Ten Hag’s side will then face Lyon at Murrayfield in Scotland before heading to the US to face Arsenal, Wrexham, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

The Red Devils will then be back on home soil to host Lens at Old Trafford before travelling to Ireland to face Athletic Bilbao in their final pre-season fixture.

United then host Wolves on the opening day of the Premier League season on August 14.
