Man Utd may be onto something with Harry Maguire swap deal as exit likely
Manchester United thought Maguire would become a club legend when they signed the England international from Leicester back in the summer transfer window of 2019.
However, while he had his uses under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he’s now been out of sorts for nearly two years.
Maguire’s stock plummeted under Ralf Rangnick during the German’s dismal stint in the dugout, with the centre-back sometimes falling out of favour.
And he’s clearly failed to impress Ten Hag ever since the Dutchman’s appointment, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane the 53-year-old’s preferred defensive pairing.
United are open to cutting Maguire loose this summer, even if the former Leicester star would prefer to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place.
But a swap deal with Inter Milan could, potentially, suit both parties.
Back in January, the Serie A giants surprisingly enquired about Maguire’s availability as they looked to strengthen their defence.
Yet United, reluctant to lose their skipper halfway through the season, rebuffed the approach.
Fast-forward to now and the Red Devils are determined to sign Onana from Inter, with the 27-year-old willing to make the move.
The Cameroon international previously played under Ten Hag at Ajax, with the pair winning three league titles together.
United feel Onana’s ability to play out from the back would make him the perfect signing for the club.
De Gea is currently a free agent and, while he could still stay and sign a new contract, a parting of ways seems increasingly likely.
United may also cut Dean Henderson loose, with Nottingham Forest keen on a permanent deal for the England international after a successful loan stint.
And uncertainty surrounds Tom Heaton as well, with Everton and Luton both interested in the veteran.
United need Onana but Inter’s £50million price tag, right now, represents an issue.
The Red Devils are having to be frugal with their transfer budget this summer in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.
Therefore, using Maguire in a swap deal to secure the signing of Onana could be a way to go.
Inter, despite signing Francesco Acerbi from Lazio, are a centre-back short.
That’s because they’ve lost Milan Skriniar, with the 28-year-old poised to join Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.
And what ultimately happens remains to be seen.
Speaking recently, meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand urged Maguire to ditch United and leave in order to secure regular first-team football.
“I think he needs to,” he said when asked about the Red Devils skipper.
“If he wants to resurrect his career he has to go in the summer. He cannot stay there and play second fiddle.
“If he genuinely wants to stay as an England player and get back on track.”
