Man Utd ‘offer Ole Gunnar Solskjaer flop to Jose Mourinho’ after new Mount bid

Manchester United have reportedly offered Roma the chance to sign Donny van de Beek this summer as part of their plan to bolster their transfer budget. The disappointing Dutchman, who was signed for £34million by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from Erik ten Hag’s former side Ajax in 2020, has failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford and now he looks set to depart after three underwhelming seasons in the North West.

There had been optimism that Van de Beek would benefit from the appointment of ex-boss Ten Hag last summer but the midfielder has endured another frustrating campaign that was plagued by a season-ending knee injury sustained in the 3-0 win over Bournemouth in January.

Now Gianluca Di Marzio is reporting that the Old Trafford hierarchy have offered former United boss Jose Mourinho the chance to sign the player this summer.

However, the Giallorossi do not consider the deal as a priority and will instead take time to make a decision on the move over the next few days.

Roma are still licking their wounds following their heartbreaking penalty-shootout defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final in Budapest.

The Italian club will now be tasked with executing a transfer window that satisfies legendary boss Mourinho, whose long-term future in Rome remains in doubt amid reported interest from Saudi Arabia and Paris Saint-Germain.

The Serie A outfit have already moved quickly to snap up Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka on free transfers.

With loanee Gini Wijnaldum also due to depart it’s thought that further midfield reinforcements could be on the agenda for Roma which is why United have floated the idea of signing Van de Beek.

Ten Hag made it clear back in November that the Netherlands international was facing an uphill struggle to turn his United career around.

“It’s either he fights and proves himself in this environment or he goes, but for me, there is still a way for him,” Ten Hag said towards the end of 2022. “But it’s not going to be easy for him because the competition there is really strong.”

The 26-year-old failed to impress on loan at Everton in the second half of the 2021/22 season and made little impact upon his return to United last term.

Although injuries have undeniably played a part in his lack of progress at Old Trafford, United have now strengthened their midfield options with the signings of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

The Red Devils are also in the hunt to sign Mason Mount and have now seen two bids rejected for the Chelsea attacking midfielder although an agreement is thought to be edging closer.

Should Mount arrive this summer it would only diminish Van de Beek’s chances of making the grade at Old Trafford – something that already looks highly unlikely.

United have now made the player available for transfer with Van de Beek set to be pushed towards the exit door alongside a host of other fringe players.

Brazilian midfielder Fred could also leave Old Trafford this summer with Fulham among those keen on the former Shakhtar Donetsk man.

That said, there is currently a reluctance from Fulham to meet United’s £20m asking price.

Ten Hag is mindful that he needs to recoup some funds in the summer window in order to maximise his spending power and letting players leave for on the cheap is simply not viable if he wishes to land top targets.
