Man Utd set bare ‘minimum’ transfer requirement Ralf Rangnick must fulfil in new role

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick knows his ‘minimum’ requirement ahead of the summer transfer window. Rangnick will take a role upstairs to advise the club on recruitment and other football-related matters after a new permanent boss has been appointed.

The Red Devils aren’t likely to be too active this month, despite their underperformance in the Premier League so far.

But according to the Manchester Evening News, United’s summer recruitment plan usually comes together around a similar time as the club draws up a shortlist of targets in different positions.

And Rangnick is already involved in recruitment discussions ahead of taking up his consultancy role at the end of the season.

United will prioritise signing a central midfielder this year, as well as an attacking addition, with both positions ‘the very minimum’ business expected.

In terms of outgoings, many expect somewhat of a mass exodus at Old Trafford this year amid reports of growing numbers of fringe players unhappy with their current situation.

But Rangnick has cooled those suggestions, explaining that managing a loaded squad isn’t an issue exclusive to United.

He told reporters: “This is not only an issue with a club like Manchester United. When you have a big squad, and we have a big squad, we have at least in the last two games had most of those players available.

“Yes, we had an issue with three centre-backs missing out against Wolves, but, in general, we had most of the players available apart from Paul Pogba.

“If you have that many players and only 10 [outfield] players can play and three [are] being substituted, then, of course, you have quite a number of players, in our case 12, 13, 14 players who don’t play or are not even being in the squad.”

“That those players are not happy about that situation is clear; it’s obvious. In total, we have a big squad.

“I tend to explain to players, every two to three weeks, why they are not playing, but, obviously, I cannot do that in every game. That is an issue in our team as well as other clubs.”
