Man Utd star David De Gea ‘agrees new contract’ just days after West Ham blunder
Manchester United star David De Gea has agreed a new contract with the club just days after his poor error in his side’s 1-0 defeat to West Ham, according to reports. The 32-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season. However, despite his stock falling, it appears the Spain international is poised to stay at Old Trafford.
Manchester United were narrowly beaten by West Ham on Sunday, with De Gea allowing a tame shot from Said Benrahma to squirm under his body.
However, the Telegraph say the 32-year-old has now agreed to stay at Old Trafford – despite the veteran attracting criticism for his performances this season.
It’s claimed De Gea has agreed the terms of his new deal, with the framework involving a ‘lower basic salary and incentives for matches played’, as well as how he fares in competitions next term.
Earlier in the season, United didn’t want to negotiate a fresh contract with the veteran still pocketing roughly £350,000-a-week.
But the stalwart, who has been at the club ever since moving from Atletico Madrid in 2011, is now poised to remain at United as they look to challenge for the Premier League title next season.
Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag wants another Pogba and it makes sense
While De Gea is set to prolong his stay, however, he’s not been guaranteed the No 1 jersey next season.
The veteran’s error against West Ham came after previous errors against the likes of Brighton and Brentford over the course of the campaign.
United will be welcoming Dean Henderson back from his loan spell at Nottingham Forest come the summer – and it’s feasible the England international will be given a chance to prove his worth.
Jack Butland is likely to return to Crystal Palace, however, having failed to feature since his January arrival.
And with Tom Heaton approaching the twilight years of his career, it’s possible he’ll be shown the door as well.
Speaking after De Gea’s latest blunder, Ten Hag defended the veteran.
“Nothing changes,” he said when quizzed about the United goalkeeper.
“We could have made it easier with a result but we need three wins in four games and everything is still in our hands.
“We started well, created chances and dictated the game but then just like at Brighton in midweek one individual mistake cost us.
“We have to learn to stay calm and composed. We had some chances but we have to create more.
“Now, for the first time since Christmas, we have a full week to reset, reload and get the energy back to keep going.
“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. What we need is for everyone to stick together, for individuals to take responsibility and if we play as a team we will get the points we need.”
United star Christian Eriksen also defended De Gea, adding: “He [De Gea] is one of the reasons why we are where we are.
“He has proven that again and again. Anyone can have a bad game or a little mistake.
“We had the team and we had the qualities. We should have bounced back and we will.”
Eriksen continued: “I think we started the game well and felt we were in a good position to really get a grip on the game.
“I think it’s been a theme in a lot of the games we’ve lost or games we’ve played this season.
“We’ve had a lot of chances to finish the games early which, unluckily, we haven’t done.
“You can see that today.
“Teams in the Premier League are tough and are good enough to punish us if we don’t take them.”
