Man Utd takeover latest with Glazers U-turn as loss of confidence emerge
As transfer speculation continues to stir, the Manchester United takeover situation looms large in the background. News from around the process is still rife as the Glazers prolong their decision on a preferred bidder, with Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe being made to wait.
Express Sport runs through all the latest Manchester United takeover news in Thursday’s round-up…
Sir Jim Ratcliffe confidence loss
The growing feeling that Sheikh Jassim has overtaken Ratcliffe as the favourite to become United’s new owner has seemingly extended to the INEOS camp.
According to French newspaper Nice-Matin, Ratcliffe is losing confidence in his chances of securing a sale.
The 70-year-old, who also owns Nice, could be increasingly pessimistic due to Sheikh Jassim closing in or the Glazers opting against selling altogether.
But it’s a stark contrast to a few weeks ago when he was considered the frontrunner with his pursuit of a majority stake.
Glazers U-turn
Throughout the seven-month process, Joel and Avram Glazer have been thought to want to remain at United in some capacity.
But the two most hesitant members of the Glazer family are now reportedly ready to walk away from Old Trafford after 18 years.
According to the Financial Times, Joel and Avram are willing to relinquish their entire stake in the club.
It could be another indicator that Sheikh Jassim’s bid, a debt-free offer for the whole club, is now favoured by the American owners.
Share price slump
As an announcement or significant update continues to be delayed, United’s share price on the New York Stock Exchange has taken a hit.
Last week, the share price surpassed $25 amid intense reports that Sheikh Jassim was negotiating a period of exclusivity.
However, the silence that has followed has seen it fall to $23.65 and then $22.50… and then $22.28 before slightly rebounding.
Shareholders will join the fan base and figures at the club in hoping the Glazers come to a decision sooner rather than later.
