Man Utd target Onana ‘flying in today’ in race against time to make US plane
Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is reportedly expected to travel to England today to sign for Manchester United. Erik ten Hag made the ex-Ajax goalkeeper his top target this summer, and he looks set to reunite with the shot-stopper before his side travel to the US for pre-season.
Despite club takeover negotiations threatening to overshadow the summer transfer market, United have made significant progress in addressing some of their major squad issues. Ten Hag has welcomed Mason Mount to his ranks to provide creativity to his midfield, whilst Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund has been identified as their top striker target.
Signing a new goalkeeper was also a priority at Old Trafford, and the departure of David de Gea as a free agent made the position a pressing matter. Negotiations with Inter were soon accelerated for Onana, with a move now imminent.
According to Alfredo Pedulla, Inter are pushing to complete the deal now as they are no longer distracted by attempting to negotiate a deal with Chelsea for Romelu Lukaku. They have withdrawn from the race to sign the Belgian international and want to ‘close the deal’.
Onana is said to be eagerly waiting to fly to England to put pen to paper on the deal, with his flight to Manchester set to take off today. The 27-year-old will hope to finalise the move before Sunday draws to a close so that he is ready to travel with his new teammates to America to embark on their pre-season campaign.
United are expected to pay a base fee of approximately £38million for the goalkeeper, though add-ons will see the fee reach the £43m mark which Inter insisted on throughout negotiations with all interested parties, including Chelsea earlier this summer.
