Man Utd targeting players Scholes and Rio Ferdinand are unsure of in £150m spree

Manchester United plan to spend over £150million in the summer transfer window but their list of targets contain some players that club legends Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand are still unsure of. Erik ten Hag wants to see the Red Devils showcase huge ambition in the summer market, regardless of who is sitting upstairs come the end of the gruelling takeover process.

United are looking to bolster their forward line and midfield options and their key targets are already within the public domain.

An early swoop for Mason Mount is in the pipeline and Chelsea are expected to receive a swift bid from United once the transfer window opens.

But Scholes isn’t sure of Mount or whether he provided enough goals or assists to warrant his massive price tag – which could exceed £60million.

“Look, I like Mason Mount… does he do enough?” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

“I thought when he first came onto the scene, ‘have got a new Frank Lampard?’. I know we talked before about not comparing players to these types.

“But I expected him to score goals, a lot more goals, in big games, to win you games, he hasn’t really kicked on from there.

“I think a change of club might not be a bad thing for him.”

In attack, United will target Harry Kane but they are expected to work around the assumption Tottenham will not sanction a sale to a direct rival.

Therefore the Red Devils could be tasked with moving onto other alternatives and Napoli frontman Victor Osimhen is among the most attractive names on the market.

Osimhen is valued at around £130m by Napoli but could be attainable for closer to £90m.

With United planning to spend over £150m this summer, there is huge risk involved in shelling out big fees on just two players.

Add to that, Ferdinand isn’t totally convinced Osimhen is worthy of a club-record fee.

The ex-United centre-back said after waxing lyrical about Kane, “Osimhen is a different kettle of fish. He’s 24-years-old, scored goals in France and Italy. Won the league [in Italy] and knows how to win leagues.

“He’s been a No.9 at a dominant team. Is that transferable to the Premier League? No-one knows that. That’s the chance United would have to take on him.

“That’s the only risk I see. He doesn’t know the league. Ability wise and profile, he ticks every box, but there is an unknown factor. Can he adapt?

“I’d take either of those two and I’d be happy but Kane guarantees you 25 goals a season, there’s no doubt he would get that.”

It must be noted, a move for Mount seems more concrete than a swoop for Osimhen at this stage but United are actively interested in both options.
