Man Utd transfer chief John Murtough must beware of costly Jadon Sancho transfer repeat

Manchester United transfer chief John Murtough is treading on thin ice over the approach for Jadon Sancho this summer. The Red Devils have been long linked with the England international, and fans’ patience is beginning to run thin.

Manchester United are risking falling into the same trap they fell into last season over their approach for Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils are once again being linked with a big money move for Sancho this summer.

Recent reports suggest that serious discussions have taken place with Borussia Dortmund over move worth around £80m.

United were offering a similar amount last summer, but failed to reach an agreement because they played hard ball with Dortmund looking for closer to £110m.

A recent report from Bild revealed that United had submitted their opening bid of £59.5million for the player, some £20m short of the £80m valuation which Dortmund have pinned to the talented 21-year-old.

It looks to be the same old story with United, who are trying to land a bargain price for Sancho.

But Old Trafford chief Murtough must ensure that is not the case and get a deal over the line to show fans that United really do believe they can win a Premier League title this summer.

A top tier right winger is exactly what United have been searching for for so long, to miss out on a player as talented as Sancho could really come back to haunt them.

A recent report from The Athletic has stated that if Man United cannot see out their proposed deal for Sancho this summer, the player’s preference is to run down his contract with Dortmund and leave for free in 2023.

Of course, United could still be in with a shot of landing him at that point.

But it would also invite virtually every major club in Europe to the negotiating table with Barcelona, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea all having shown interest in the past.

With no fee to pose a financial stumbling block to any proposed deal, The Red Devils would effectively be working on a level playing-field with the rest of Europe’s heavyweights.

Sancho is widely expected to complete a move to Old Trafford this summer, having endured a lengthy transfer saga between the two clubs last summer which resulted in the former Manchester City winger staying in the Bundesliga.

As expected, United have resurfaced but early transfer proceedings between the two clubs do not indicate that the deal is close to completion.
