Man Utd’s Antony left red-faced by Arsenal’s ‘worst ever signing’ Pepe
What makes Pepe’s stats even more impressive is the fact that Arsenal had a turbulent season when he first joined the club. Unai Emery, the head coach who signed him, was sacked in November 2019.
After several weeks of Freddie Ljungberg being in interim charge, a rookie manager in Mikel Arteta took over in late December. Arsenal, like every team in the country, then had a couple of months off due to the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.
Pepe was still able to find form upon the resumption and went on to help the Gunners win their 14th FA Cup. In contrast, Antony has had a pretty settled first season in terms of the same manager being in charge at United, although the World Cup being in the middle of the campaign would have been unsettling for some players.
Antony could still win three trophies in his first season at United. Ten Hag’s side are in the quarter-final of the Europa League and semis of the FA Cup.
There is still time for him to end the season on a high. But it looks highly unlikely that he will get near Pepe’s tally of goal contributions before the conclusion.
