Man Utd’s position on Greenwood explained amid Rashford injury fears

Manchester United are currently worried about Marcus Rashford in the wake of his injury against Everton on Saturday. The England international limped out of the showdown at Old Trafford, with reports now suggesting he could be set for weeks on the sidelines. But Mason Greenwood won’t be drafted in as a replacement between now and the end of the campaign, with the 21-year-old still unavailable for selection.

Manchester United cruised to a straightforward victory over Everton on Saturday, with Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial on target to secure all three points.

But their afternoon was soured by an injury to Rashford, who trudged down the tunnel in the 81st minute.

Speaking after the game, Erik ten Hag didn’t sound happy.

“We have to wait [on Rashford’s injury], it doesn’t look good,” stated the 53-year-old. “Once again it’s down to the schedule, you can’t play three games in six days. Everyone wants to see big players on the pitch.

“He played against Fulham, he played against Betis, he’s playing for England so he’s fit, he’s ready to play and the thinking is we have the most crazy schedule from all the Premier League teams.

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

Greenwood won’t resume training until next season at the earliest, with United continuing to conduct an investigation behind the scenes.

The Red Devils forward has told club officials in recent weeks he’d love to return to action, with his contract currently due to run until 2025.

But United are adamant they are conducting due diligence into the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

They also know making a controversial call, at this stage of their campaign, could hinder their chances of finishing the season on a high.

United are battling to finish in the top four, having finished sixth under Ralf Rangnick last season.

They remain in contention to win the Europa League, with Sevilla up next in that competition on Thursday (8pm).

And they’re also hoping to claim glory in the FA Cup, too, with United due to lock horns with Brighton in the semi-final of that competition this month.

Reports have claimed there’s a split at United whether Greenwood should come back and resume first-team duties.

Staff in the football department are reportedly claiming he should be given a chance to prove his worth.

Others, however, are wary of the commercial impact playing Greenwood again could have on the team.

Regarding Rashford, meanwhile, Stephen Warnock recently claimed the England international’s sensational form this season was down to the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo back in November.

“Ronaldo might have rubbed off on him,” the former Liverpool star said.

“Rashford will have seen what hard work and dedication can lead to but then it’s down to him to do it so huge credit to him for wanting to get better.

“Once Ronaldo was moved out, Rashford became the main man and a lot can crumble having that weight and expectation on their shoulders.

“He’s embraced it.”
