Manchester United suspect David de Gea returned false positive test for COVID-19: Reports

Manchester United suspect goalkeeper David de Gea has returned a false positive test for COVID-19 ahead of Saturday’s game against Tottenham Hotspur , it has been claimed.

The 31-year-old has been a key member of the Manchester United team this season with the goalkeeper returning to his usual best following a somewhat disappointing previous season.

It had been previously reported De Gea would miss the game through illness and reports surfaced about how it was due to returning a positive test for Coronavirus. However, Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News has now claimed the Red Devils suspect it wasn’t an accurate test result.

Henderson has now been recalled from The Lowry as staff think De Gea produced a false positive. So De Gea could be back in goal after what #mufc suspect was a false alarm. Update @ManUtdMEN shortly. Usual quiet morning covering the club…

It could have been a huge loss for Manchester United as he has consistently saved the side from further disarray with some inspired performances during a woeful campaign so far.

If the latest developments are to be believed, second-choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been recalled from The Lowry hotel, with De Gea in with a chance to start the game.

The 25-year-old Henderson has been on the fringes of first-team football and is reportedly considering a move.

If he misses out on an opportunity tonight, it will be another blow for the Englishman, who is keen to play regularly in a bid to be involved with the England team at the 2022 World Cup.

Meanwhile, Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick also has three of his men back from injury.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane have all been confirmed to be part of the squad for the game against Spurs.

Should Manchester United target a new goalkeeper in the summer?

David de Gea has produced some magnificent saves this season but there is a cause for concern with regards to his age.

Many Manchester United fans believe he is somewhat of a detriment to the team.

At times, the 31-year-old Spaniard is apprehensive in coming out of his area and does not command his box like most dominant goalkeepers in the Premier League.

He can also be errorsome with the ball at his feet, which under a manager like the current frontrunner for the permanent role Erik ten Hag would cause major problems.

Ajax’s Ten Hag plays out from the back and is keen on his goalkeeper possessing the talents in order to be able to pick out a pass.

Varane actually cannot believe how odd his GK is ????https://t.co/5rpUapdJaV

The club have previously been linked with Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The Express reported last year that United were targeting the Slovakian to replace De Gea in a swap deal.

That deal never came to fruition and Oblak has encountered somewhat of a problematic period this season for the La Liga giants.

Daily Mail reported last year that United had looked at Burnley’s Nick Pope and Brighton & Hove Albion keeper Robert Sanchez as potential candidates to replace De Gea.

It will be interesting to see what Manchester United decide to do with their resources between the sticks this summer.
