Marcel Sabitzer may have played final Man Utd game as Erik ten Hag dealt blow

Manchester United have ruled Marcel Sabitzer out for the rest of the season through injury in a blow to Erik ten Hag’s top-four and FA Cup hopes. Sabitzer may have played his final game for the Red Devils ahead of the expiry of his loan stint from Bayern Munich.

A club statement read: “Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer has suffered a meniscal injury which will, unfortunately, rule him out for the remainder of the season.

“Everyone at the club is disappointed to lose Marcel’s services as the Reds chase a strong finish to the season in the Premier League and FA Cup, and we are grateful for his contribution to our progress so far.

“We would like to wish Marcel well in having a speedy recovery.”

Sabitzer made 18 appearances after joining United in the January transfer window as an emergency loan in response to Christian Eriksen’s injury lay-off.

He scored three goals this season, including a brace in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla before United collapsed and crashed out.

Reports claim there has yet to be a decision made about Sabitzer’s future beyond his loan at Old Trafford.

United would need to enter fresh talks to negotiate a permanent deal if Ten Hag views the 29-year-old midfielder as part of his plans.

But for now, United are in contact with Bayern over his rehabilitation and whether it’s best placed at Carrington or in Germany.

Sabitzer will miss the final three Premier League games against AFC Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham and the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Ten Hag is bound to miss the energy the Austria international provides off the bench and the leadership qualities he possesses.

Eriksen has returned to regular action after missing a couple of months at the start of 2023, while Raphael Varane made his comeback in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Wolves.

There are concerns over Marcus Rashford, who missed the triumph through injury.

But he could be back in contention for the trip to Bournemouth this weekend in a welcome boost as United eye two more league wins to secure a top-four spot.
