Marcus Rashford has been bigging up ‘leader’ Harry Kane for five years

Marcus Rashford has not been afraid to praise Harry Kane in the past with the 25-year-old particularly keen to hail his leadership skills. Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Tottenham talisman and it is one that the Red Devils’ top scorer may be pushing for internally.

Kane’s Tottenham future is currently in doubt amid his contract situation. His current deal expires in 2024 and Spurs will be under pressure to sell him in the summer to avoid losing him for nothing if he decides against signing an extension.

United have been the club most heavily linked with his services with Erik ten Hag on the lookout for a new No 9. Multiple reports have said that Kane is his top target along with Napoli star Victor Osimhen as the Dutchman looks for his new frontman for next season.

Kane already has one big fan at Old Trafford with Rashford regularly singing the striker’s praises after spending years together in the England national team. One area of Kane’s game that he has been particularly keen to talk up is his leadership, something that could come in handy for Ten Hag with club captain Harry Maguire likely to leave over the summer and questions over the suitability of Bruno Fernandes to inherit the armband long-term.

“He’s been a brilliant leader for us leading up to the tournament as well as now we’ve started,” Rashford said during the 2018 World Cup. “He always leads by example and there is no better way than by scoring goals like he has been doing.

“He’s a top forward. His career is only going to go up and up. He’s young and at this stage in his career, he is going to keep on improving. Who knows how good he can get”.

He later went on to describe Kane as one of the best strikers in the world as he continued to lavish the praise on his international captain during the Euros three years later.

“I’ve thought for a while now that he has been one of the best number nines in the world. Nothing that he does now changes my mind.

“Put that alongside the work that he does off the ball, the dirty work as you can call it, it’s something that you can’t not look at and appreciate. I’m pleased that he’s had such a good year and hopefully he continues that now in the rest of the tournament.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Ten Hag will move to bring Kane in during the summer but Rashford will be hoping that he does given how much he enjoys playing with the 29-year-old for the national team.
