Marvel’s New Silk Series Drops Cindy Moon Back Into the Spider-Verse

The Spider-Verse is all the rage right now, between the impending release of the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Dan Slott and Mark Bagley’s Spider-Man giving fans “The End of the Spider-Verse.” But it’s not just Peter Parker and Miles Morales who are spending 2023 exploring the multiverse. Silk is also gearing up for a new multiversal adventure in her latest miniseries from writer Cindy Kim and artist Ig Guara.

Check out the slideshow gallery below for a look at Guara’s dynamic work in Silk #1, and then scroll down to learn more about Cindy Moon’s latest Marvel Comics adventure.

Continuing Silk’s Story

The new Silk series actually marks the second time Kim has written Cindy Moon. She previously worked on the 2022 Silk series with artist Takeshi Miyazawa. Kim told IGN that having prior experience with the character is allowing her to think bigger and bolder for Round 2.

“I’m so excited to continue writing Cindy’s story,” Kim said. “I felt much more comfortable with the character this time around, which is why I wanted to throw Cindy into a whole variety of new worlds. I also felt like I finally had the time and space to explore a character who’s always been in Cindy’s periphery but hasn’t gotten their own spotlight yet.”

Fortunately, despite the fact that this series is a followup to last year’s volume of Silk, it’s also designed to be an accessible entry point for anyone who didn’t read that series or Marvel’s previous monthly Silk comics.

“This story draws from characters and themes in Cindy’s past but is largely standalone. It should provide some new perspective into her everyday life. However, she’s going to face off against a villain who will threaten to stay in her life for some time.”

As for how the chnage in artist affects the new series, Kim said, “Tak and Ig are both incredible artists so I knew the book would look great with either one of them. I didn’t think much about the change when writing and once I started seeing the art, I was blown away by the way Ig was able to translate the tone and feelings of the places I wrote. I’m always excited to get his pages and see what he’s come up with.”

Silk’s Return to the Spider-Verse

Silk has always been intrinsically tied to the Spider-Verse and the extended Spider-Man family. At one point she even formed a superhero trinity with Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman during Marvel’s “Spider-Women” crossover event. But this time Silk is lfying solo in her journey through the multiverse, and it all starts when Cindy Moon begins investigating a mysterious death in Los Angeles.

“Cindy’s investigation is going to be cut short way earlier than she expects because a new, more pressing mystery is going to take priority. It’s a space she’s never been in before so she’s definitely out of her comfort zone.”

Marvel is keeping the plot details under wraps for now, but if the cover to issue #1 is any indication, Cindy’s journey will take her into other worlds full of zombies, cowboys and pirates.

Kim also teased, “Cindy will receive help from a fellow super hero friend of hers who most people might not expect. But it’s someone who will have Cindy’s back no matter what and doesn’t hesitate to jump in when they hear she’s in trouble.”

Finally, with reports that Amazon is developing a Silk: Spider Society series, we asked Kim what her hopes were for Silk’s potential live-action debut.

“My biggest hope is that Silk gets the awesome action sequences she deserves! She’s one of the most formidable and clever fighters out there so it’d be thrilling to see her in action whether animated or live action.”

Silk #1 will be released on Wednesday, May 10.
