Mason Greenwood arrested on suspicion of rape and assault
Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. Posts appeared on social media on Sunday morning showing a woman with a number of injuries, and she appeared to suggest there had been an act of sexual assault.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that they were making “enquiries”, and then later released a statement saying an arrest had been made.
It read: “Greater Manchester Police was made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.
“An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.
“He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.”
It comes after Manchester United said they were “aware” of the allegations, and they announced that “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice”.
Greenwood’s sponsor Nike also put out a statement, which read: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
Greenwood came through United’s academy and has made a total of 129 senior appearances for the team, scoring 36 goals.
The 20-year-old has also won one cap for England.
United next play on Friday when they take on Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
