Mason Greenwood showcases quality finishing as Getafe hit double figures in win
Mason Greenwood showcased his striker’s instinct for Getafe on Wednesday night as he helped his side secure a historic win over Tardienta in the Copa del Rey. The forward scored twice during a 12-0 away win at the Estadio El Alcoraz, with his second goal showing why he was so highly rated at Manchester United.
Greenwood has now scored three goals since joining the Spanish side and is beginning to settle into Pepe Bordalas’ team. The England international is yet to show what he is truly capable of since leaving United on loan, though his performance on Wednesday provided glimpses of the talent that made him a lethal forward in the Premier League.
After John Patrick’s opener, Greenwood scored his first goal on the night in the 15th minute. The forward was on hand to tap in from close range after a well-worked move down the right saw the loanee left in acres of space in the penalty area.
Greenwood’s goal was only the start of Tardienta’s problems as the floodgates opened in the Copa del Ray first round clash. The No 12 then grabbed his second shortly after the half-time interval with a sweet strike into the bottom corner.
After a poor clearance from a Tardienta defender, the ball was quickly worked back into the box to an unmarked Greenwood. The Red Devils academy product then controlled the ball before taking a touch to get it out of his feet and firing a low strike back across the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
Greenwood then came close to bagging himself a hat-trick late on after another low shot left Tardienta goalkeeper Diego Salavera helpless, but the referee promptly ruled the goal out for offside. The forward will take plenty of confidence from his performance though and being back among the goals will provide the starlet with a boost as his side prepare to take on Cadiz on Monday night.
Greenwood is expected to leave United permanently at the end of the season after his boyhood club revealed that he would ‘continue his career away from Old Trafford’ on deadline day in the summer transfer window.
The Sun report that the versatile striker would be keen to join Getafe permanently at the end of the season if they table a bid for his services, with other clubs around Europe also monitoring his progress in the La Liga closely.
