Mason Mount joining Man Utd may be bad news for five stars after second bid

Manchester United have made signing Mason Mount a top priority this summer with Chelsea seemingly willing to do business. United saw their second bid worth up to £50million rejected by the Blues, who are requesting a deal closer to £65m.

It appears as though all parties involved are trying to get an agreement reached and Mount could even be a United player in time for pre-season training next month. Last season was a year to forget for Mount as he fell down the pecking order at Chelsea with his form dipping.

He finished with just three goals and two assists in the Premier League and cut a frustrated figure on several occasions. But, at 24 years of age, Mount is still seen as one of England’s best young players and has shown good versatility throughout his career.

However, that versatility could leave a few question marks for some of the players in United’s squad. Express Sport takes a look at five players who could be threatened by Mount’s potential arrival.

Christian Eriksen

It appears as though Mount is seen as a more direct replacement for Christian Eriksen with United seemingly hoping the England international can operate from a deeper role. Mount is seen as someone who can contribute as a box-to-box midfielder and his arrival would ease the reliance on Eriksen.

But Eriksen, 31, appeared to thrive in his role in the United midfield and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be happy in a back-up role.

Bruno Fernandes

The more obvious role for Mount is in the attacking midfield position, where he’s played for most of his time at Chelsea. Bruno Fernandes is seen as United’s talisman through the middle, but Mount may be seen as the natural successor to Fernandes.

Only David de Gea played more minutes than Fernandes last season, but Mount’s arrival would potentially eat into that.

Donny van de Beek

Donny van de Beek’s time at Old Trafford hasn’t worked out at all and United were always going to listen to offers for the midfielder this summer. But Mount’s possible arrival would all but seal Van de Beek’s exit from Old Trafford with even more limited opportunities for the Dutchman to play.

Alejandro Garnacho

While Mount’s usual position is in midfield, he was also often deployed out wide and he could be an option for Ten Hag in a similar position. Marcus Rashford’s position is safe while Ten Hag appears to favour Antony out on the right wing and a striker is set to be signed this summer.

That leaves Jadon Sancho as the third-choice winger and Mount could potentially take Garnacho’s spot as fourth-choice.

Anthony Elanga

The same could be said for Anthony Elanga, only the Sweden international may end up being sold this summer. United still need attacking options in the squad, but if Mount is signed along with another striker then Elanga’s chance of breaking into the team diminishes even further.
