Mason Mount’s message to Pochettino proves he’s the perfect Man Utd player
Chelsea star Mason Mount has spoken with his new boss Mauricio Pochettino amid the ongoing transfer speculation linking him with Manchester United – and his current stance may prove exactly why Erik ten Hag wants him to move to Old Trafford. The two clubs are yet to come to an agreement over a fee for the England midfielder, as the Red Devils have had several bids rejected over the past few weeks.
Their latest £55million offer was deemed not enough by the Blues, who are holding out for over £65m for Mount even though he has just a year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge. The bid remains on the table, but United have turned their attention to other targets such as Moises Caicedo – having grown frustrated at Chelsea’s valuation of the 24-year-old.
In the meantime, Mount has spoken with Pochettino and confirmed that he will remain a model professional and report for pre-season training if a deal is not struck with United according to The Telegraph. He will be available for the Blues’ tour of the United States and will link up with the rest of the squad next week.
However, the group could be unrecognisable with the likes of Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Hakim Ziyech, Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy among those on the verge of leaving Chelsea.
Mount has told Pochettino that he will continue to do all that he can for Chelsea while he remains at the club and even though the Argentine does not want to take those with unresolved futures on his pre-season tour that begins on July 17, he may have no other option with so many departures.
Mount’s continued professionalism amid his uncertain future will likely have only further proven to Ten Hag that he would be a perfect fit at United, who remain willing to speak with Chelsea if they lower their demands. It is a trait that the Dutch boss clearly values, having called out his own players for a lack of it after their 7-0 defeat to Liverpool in March.
“I think we played a decent first half. One mistake in organisation just before half-time,” Ten Hag told BBC Match of the Day. “Second half it was just not us. It was not our standards. We didn’t play as a team. It was unprofessional.
