Max Verstappen fans urged to ‘be nice’ to Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton at Zandvoort GP

Damon Hill has reached out to Max Verstappen fans and asked them to “be nice” to the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton when Formula One returns the Zandvoort later this season after a 36-year wait.

Home hero Verstappen has yet to race in front of his home crowd, with the 2020 planned return cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet tensions seem to be boiling over between fans, as Hamilton and Verstappen go head-to-head on track, with the 36-year-old subjected to booing after beating the Dutchman to pole at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

“Dutch fans, be nice to Lewis, will you?” said 1996 world champion Hill on the F1 Nation podcast.

“Because he’s doing what he’s good at, and it’s gonna be fun. It’s gonna be good. Because we’ve got a lot of listeners in Holland, who listen to us.

“They’re good sports. They’re good sports, the Dutch. It’ll be great to have a Dutch Grand Prix, the first-ever Dutch Grand Prix for how many years?”

“It was an amazing qualifying lap and it has been amazing teamwork from everyone, Valtteri included, trying to push the car forward.

“They guys at the factory have not left any stone unturned. I’ve never felt so great with the booing [from the fans], I don’t mind it.

“The soft tyre is worth something like five metres into turn one, it was surprising to see everyone in the top 10 on the softs apart from us.

“I hope the weather is good for everyone, enjoy the sun and say safe.”
