Max Verstappen hits out at Brad Pitt as Hamilton jumps to movie star’s defence
Red Bull star Max Verstappen has hit out at Brad Pitt appearing at the British Grand Prix this weekend, as the movie star was visible at Silverstone as he was filming for his upcoming untitled F1 movie. The 59-year-old celebrity was present at Sunday’s race as he joined the drivers for the national anthem and also was in attendance at the drivers’ briefing.
However, not everybody was enthusiastic about Pitt being in and amongst those that took the grid. Verstappen, who won the race after beating Brits Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, insisted he “can’t be bothered” taking an interest in the cameras following Pitt around near him.
“I think they’re going to use some shots of everybody, in terms of onboard cameras and stuff,” said the Dutchman to Motorsport.com. “I completely can’t be bothered with this. In the end, a film is always made to create a little bit of a show in it. Because yes, of course, it won’t all be real. But I think it’s all fine. I’m actually not that much into it.”
Verstappen appeared to be the odd one out of those in attendance at the briefing, as Hamilton was among the many to be enthused by Pitt’s arrival to the F1 world. The Mercedes man described the meeting as “probably the best drivers’ briefing we’ve ever had.”
The sport is not short of celebrities rubbing shoulders with drivers, as often highlighted by Sky Sports F1 reporter Martin Brundle’s famous gridwalks, though such exclusive access is rarely granted. Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell echoed his sentiments, comparing the meeting to meeting Tom Cruise and Roger Federer.
“I think it’s one of those when you when you see a worldwide superstar for the first time, it’s quite surreal,” Russell said. “And then it’s only when you get to be with those individuals whether it was Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt or Roger Federer, whoever we’ve been fortunate enough to meet, you recognise they’re just normal human beings. He was joking around and having a good time and just kind of one of the boys really. So excited to see what the movie does.”
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc added: “It’s fun, it’s a new face and definitely quite unexpected to see Brad in the drivers’ briefing. They did a bit of a brief of what to expect for the movie and it just is very exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing it. Nice guy.”
Speaking prior to the race, Hamilton further backed Pitt’s endeavours in F1. “Brad looks like he’s ageing backwards,” he said. “He looks great for his age. Of course that was a big topic at the beginning when we were discussing the first story.
“But he’s super-fit. He is such an iconic actor. He’s always done such an incredible job. I can’t tell you how excited I am to have Brad Pitt in Formula One. It’s incredible.”
