Mbappé backtracks, says he’ll play for PSG
Kylian Mbappé has confirmed that he will begin the upcoming season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) despite opting not to trigger a 12-month extension on his contract. The 24-year-old French superstar defended his decision, stating that staying at PSG is his only current option. Mbappé addressed the media while preparing with the French national team, stressing on his commitment to his country and his desire to focus on their upcoming match.
Mbappé downplayed the significance of his letter to PSG, asserting that it was sent prior to joining the French squad and was not intended to cause harm or offence. Despite the ensuing transfer frenzy, with rumours linking him once again to Real Madrid, the striker expressed that he is unperturbed by people’s reactions.
The news of Mbappé’s letter reignited speculation about his future, as PSG aims to avoid losing him as a free agent next year, having recently witnessed Lionel Messi’s departure without compensation. However, Mbappé avoided delving into the matter, preferring to shift the focus onto the French national team.
Regarding his club situation, Mbappé asserted that he understands and accepts the freedom of others to discuss and criticise. He emphasised his own clarity of purpose and personal convictions, stating that he knows why he acts and speaks as he does, PTI reported.
While Mbappé remains committed to PSG for the time being, he did express his desire to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. He highlighted that it had always been his dream to play in the Olympics but acknowledged the need to respect his club’s priorities.
As Mbappé prepares for his 69th appearance for the French national team, he remains focused on his responsibilities as captain and is determined to contribute to his team’s success. The prolific goal-scorer, who topped the charts at the 2022 World Cup, aims to add to his tally of 38 international goals.
