Messi suspended by PSG after flying to Saudi Arabia without permission

Paris Saint-Germain have handed Lionel Messi a two-week suspension after the forward travelled to Saudi Arabia on an unauthorised trip. The player missed training on Monday as a result of his travels as he was not willing to alter his plans.

PSG stars were informed by manager Christophe Galtier last week that all players would be given two days off – for Monday and Tuesday – if they beat Lorient on Sunday. However, the Ligue 1 side were comfortably beaten in one of their poorest displays of the campaign.

Goals from Enzo Le Fee, Darline Yongwa and Bamba Dieng ensured that PSG were handed their sixth defeat of the season and thus the planned days off were scrapped. However, Messi had previously been granted permission to travel to Saudi Arabia by the higher powers at the club to ‘honour’ his sponsorship agreement on those days.

That green light was given on the terms that he could only go if his side were to have been victorious. But Messi travelled to the Middle East regardless of the defeat, missing training on Monday and Tuesday.

Tension brewed in the dressing room in the absence of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, with some individuals left feeling very unhappy.

After much deliberation, including talks over a significant fine, the higher powers at PSG have decided to take action. The Parc des Princes outfit have reacted by handing Messi a two-week suspension and are unimpressed by the conduct of their No 30.

PSG have put their contract talks with the player into serious jeopardy in order to set a precedent. The World Cup winner’s future in Paris was already unclear and this incident may drive him closer to the exit door, with his current deal expiring this coming summer.
