Meta: Meta explains why it has delayed launch of Threads in parts of Europe – Times of India

Last week, Instagram debuted its Twitter rival called Threads. In just over five days, the app has garnered over 100 million users and has become a bonafide ‘hit’. Yet, Threads is conspicuously been missing from the European Union. Instagram has now given an explanation why the launch of Threads has been delayed in some parts of Europe. According to a report by The Verge, Meta spokesperson Christine Pai said that the app has been delayed because of “upcoming regulatory uncertainty”. The EU has come out with new regulatory guidelines under its Digital Markets Act (DMA).

EU’s strict data rules

While Meta has consciously avoided putting the blame on the EU’s strict rules, Instagram head Adam Mosseri did hint at that. According to the DMA, tech companies like Meta can’t mix data it collects from various apps like Instagram, Facebook and Threads. In a podcast with The New York Times, Mosseri said, “It’s not just disclosures and consent. It’s also verifying that there’s no data leakage,” before adding, “You have to put in place processes and technology that all but guarantee that anything you say, you can verify; and usually multiple ways.”
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) has established specific criteria for identifying a major online platform as a “gatekeeper.” This guarantees that the DMA addresses the concerns associated with large, systemic online platforms in a focused manner.
The new rules will compel gatekeepers to follow certain guidelines in their everyday operations, such as allowing third-party interoperability in specific situations, giving business users access to their generated data, providing advertising companies with the necessary tools for verification, and allowing business users to promote their offers outside the gatekeeper’s platform.
Meanwhile, in other regions, the Threads app has taken off in a big way. It has officially become the fastest-growing app and reached 100 million users. Threads beat ChatGPT, which took two months to hit the milestone.
