MG budget friendly EV for India spotted testing on roads for the first time: design, expected price

MG India recently expressed its interest in India’s EV market and will soon launch an affordable EV for the market. The company aims to bring the cost of the EV down to the Rs 10 lakh mark. The vehicle should hit the Indian market sometime in 2023.

MG small EV spotted on test in India

MG’s upcoming affordable and compact electric city car has been spotted on test in India. The Chinese motor company that recently showed interest in introducing an affordable electric city runabout seems to have begun testing in India. The vehicle that was spotted was fully camouflaged signifying early stages of testing and development.

Underneath the wraps, the car looks much like the Wuling Air EV on which it was speculated to be based. The vehicle is compact and upright which doesn’t do much for aerodynamics but surely should be a nippy enough city car. The two-door design, although unsuited for India, is here to stay. MG is likely to load up the car with the latest technologies to offer a better value proposition for the conscious Indian buyer and will include LED lighting, touchscreen infotainment system, elaborate driver’s MID, electric windows and mirrors, air conditioning, fog lamps, alloy wheels, ABS, airbags, etc.

The test car spotted was a left-hand-drive vehicle however this would be changed to right-hand-drive for gaining necessary homologation in India. The vehicle is also seen with a spare tyre mounted at the back on top of the tailgate. This too could be changed when the car makes it to India and might be repositioned under the body or stacked inside the boot if the space under the loading bay does not permit it. The vehicle will also need to upgrade with a stronger battery thermal management system, robust suspension, higher ground clearance, and a stronger AC to cope with Indian climatic conditions.
