Mick Schumacher ready to replace Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes announcement close

Lewis Hamilton remains yet to extend his stay at Mercedes despite holding lengthy talks with the German outfit behind closed doors over the last few weeks. The 38-year-old, who was replaced by Mick Schumacher during a Pirelli tyre test in Barcelona earlier this week, is only tied down until the end of this year but is widely expected to agree fresh terms with the Silver Arrows at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Mercedes have already managed to secure the future of George Russell by reportedly handing him an extension ahead of next weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, although the situation regarding Hamilton is less clear-cut and will undoubtedly need to be resolved over the coming weeks. The Brit, however, has played down fears over the length of his contract talks by insisting that he remains calm and that he is firmly expecting things to be wrapped up shortly.

“We are working on renewing my contract,” Hamilton told L’Equipe. “When we are in negotiations, there is always speculation. But I don’t even know where this story comes from.

“As long as you don’t hear it from my mouth, it will only be speculation. And I say again, we are working with Toto to finalise all of this. If it’s taking a little longer, it’s because we want to improve things for the future. I’ve been with this team for so long.”
