Microsoft announces shared device licence for Teams: What is it – Times of India
Microsoft has expanded a feature on its video-calling platform that will help users with the current working scenarios. The Redmond giant has updated its Tech Community blog post to announce the upcoming change for Teams. This feature expansion will improve remote or hybrid working situations which are the new normal for several organisations. According to the blog, Microsoft Teams has rebranded the Common Area Phone (CAP) licence into the Teams Shared Device licence which will offer broader functionalities for other shared devices. The blog mentions that the rebranded licence will be rolled out across all licencing channels by the end of 2022. These new licences will be priced at $8 per month per device.
What is a Microsoft Teams Common Area Phone (CAP) licence
Microsoft Teams CAP licences can be helpful for businesses where several users need to access a single device. CAP licences only include common area phones which are usually placed in areas that are actively used by multiple people, like a lobby or a reception.
Microsoft Teams shared device licence: What is it
The rebranded Teams Shared Device licence will expand these functionalities to other shared devices like Microsoft Teams Displays and Microsoft Teams Panels. However, the new licence will continue to offer the same features that are available for the phones deployed by enterprises in common areas. These features include — call park/retrieve, call queueing, auto attendant support, group pickup and cloud voicemail.
The Teams shared device licence is mainly designed for customers who use Teams Displays and Panels but are unwilling to pay for all the other functionalities that a Teams Rooms licence has to offer.
Microsoft has also recommended its customers to contact their respective Microsoft account executives to get a better understanding of the licences and to choose the best one that suits them. For example, if users want the one-touch meeting joining capability they have to opt for a Teams Rooms licence as this feature won’t be available in the Teams Shared Device license.

The Teams shared device licence on Teams Display will offer a hotdesking feature. This feature will help users easily find a space for work. The shared device licence will allow employees to reserve flexible workspaces and make a call on Teams display.
Users can sign into the hotdesking device with their credentials if they want to access their meetings, chats, and files. For a standalone Teams Panel, this licence will help users to reserve a common space that doesn’t need a Teams Room (for example a Yoga room). The new licence will also continue to support the CAP experience for Teams Phone.
